AI Stopped Selling Tokens This Week. It's Selling Results.

OpenAI just started letting some big customers pay only when the AI actually finishes the job. Not for tokens. Not for seats. For the result.

That is the story of this week. The labs stopped selling access to a model and started selling work that ships.

The week tokens lost the argument

The Information reported on August 31 that OpenAI is testing pay-per-outcome pricing with major customers. You pay when a task completes. That sounds small until you run an agency. We have been burning budget on retries, half-finished agent runs, and pretty demos that never leave the sandbox.

Same week, Salesforce and Anthropic launched Claudeforce. Salesforce is now sitting inside Claude with 37 prebuilt sales skills. Pipeline reviews, deal health, meeting prep. Sellers stay in the chat. The CRM becomes a backend, not a destination. Open beta is slated for September.

And Google quietly confirmed the scale war is over at the consumer layer. The Gemini app crossed 1 billion monthly users. It generates more than 150 million images a day. Google said small businesses are using that volume for marketing materials. ChatGPT already hit a billion-user scale. The assistants are now distribution, not experiments.

What this means for marketing teams

If you run campaigns, this week is not about another model drop. It is about how money and interfaces move.

  • Outcome pricing will leak into agency retainers. Clients will ask why they still pay for hours when the labs are testing payment for completed work.

  • The interface is leaving your software. Claudeforce is the warning shot. If the work happens inside Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT, your brand has to show up there too. That is generative engine optimization, not another blog tweak.

  • Creative volume is now a given. 150 million Gemini images a day means we made 20 variants is no longer a flex. Taste, brand systems, and the last 10 percent of craft are the only scarce things left.

  • Ads are already inside ChatGPT in more markets. The answer box is becoming a media channel. If you only optimize Google blue links, you are late.

We are already rebuilding client work around this. Fewer tool tours. More workflows with a pass or fail definition. If the agent cannot finish a brief, a landing page set, or a campaign QA checklist, it does not count as production.

Do this before Friday

Pick one recurring marketing task this week. Write the outcome in one sentence. Measure cost per successful finish, not cost per prompt. Then decide if a human, an agent, or a messy mix of both should own it.

Tokens were a rental fee. Results are the product. Agencies that still sell activity are going to look expensive very fast.
