OpenAI Just Shipped Agents. Marketing Is Already Buying the Inventory.

OpenAI opened the Agents API to public beta on September 10. Same week, Amazon plugged Amazon DSP into ChatGPT Ads and put Delta Vacations in the first pilot. The builders got a harness. The buyers got inventory. That is the week.

We've been stitching agent loops together for clients all year. Sessions. Context compaction. Recovery when a tool call dies at 2am. That is the unsexy work. OpenAI just productized the unsexy work.

The Agents API is a production surface, not a demo

You give the Agents API the task, the model, the tools, and an environment. OpenAI runs the Codex harness in the cloud: sessions, orchestration, context compaction, and recovery. You pick a hosted sandbox, your own box, or a partner sandbox. No extra API fee. You pay for tokens and tools.

That is not a weekend experiment. That is an agency production surface sitting on GPT-6 Astra.

What we will actually point it at this month:

  • Creative QA agents that chew through 40 variations and flag brand drift before a human opens Figma.

  • Research agents that pull competitor ads, landing pages, and offer stacks overnight.

  • Ops agents that turn a brief into a first-pass deck while the strategist is still in the kickoff.

The marketing plot twist: ChatGPT is now a media buy

While developers were reading the Agents API docs, Amazon Ads cut a deal with OpenAI. Select US advertisers can now extend Amazon DSP campaigns into ChatGPT Ads. CPC and CPM. Text and image units under the answer, marked sponsored. Product-feed ads that generate assets from the catalog. Delta Vacations is already in the pilot because travel is the highest-intent conversation happening inside a chatbot right now.

Read that again. The place people ask where they should go in November now sells the trip inside the answer. Conversational ads are not a thought piece. They are a buyable line item.

What this means if you run an agency

Two stacks just collided.

Layer 1: agentic production. Less time babysitting loops. More time on taste, brief quality, and brand systems.

Layer 2: AI-native media. ChatGPT is no longer just a research tab. It is a placement.

If your media plan still treats AI search as a footnote, you are late. If your production stack still treats agents as a side project, you are also late.

Do this next

This week, pick one live client workflow and run it through a managed agent instead of a pile of prompts. Then look at one campaign and ask where the conversation actually happens. That is the work. The APIs already shipped.
