AI agents just stopped being chatbots

Most AI tools still die when you close the tab. That stopped being true this week.

Salesforce shipped a new pack of job-ready Agentforce agents plus a runtime that can chase a goal for days and weeks, not one polite chat. OpenAI dropped a Data agent inside ChatGPT Work that connects to company warehouses, investigates what moved, and builds dashboards you can actually share. Same week. Same direction.

If you run an agency, this is not another model announcement. This is the moment agents stop answering and start owning work.

What actually shipped

On September 11, Salesforce put seven prebuilt agents on the table across sales, service, commerce, and the back office. Six are generally available now. Hunter, the outbound seller, stays in pilot until November because it is the first to run on the long-horizon plumbing — it keeps working a pipeline after the conversation ends.

Two days earlier, OpenAI launched the Data agent in ChatGPT Work. It plugs into Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, MongoDB, and files in Drive or SharePoint. Ask what changed in pipeline. It investigates. Then it turns the answer into a live dashboard. OpenAI already uses this internally. Two-thirds of their GTM team is on it.

The pattern is blunt: agents with memory of a job, not memory of a chat.

What this does to marketing teams

This is the part agencies should steal first.

  • Piper sits on the website and in the inbox. It engages inbound, qualifies, and turns traffic into pipeline while your SDR is still in a standup.

  • Carter handles commerce discovery and can close inside the chat. Product questions stop dying in a form.

  • Marketing Cloud Next is adding Agentforce agents that run campaign strategy to on-brand content. You brief the goal. The agent orchestrates. You keep the taste and the kill switch.

  • ChatGPT Ads is already in the media mix. Platforms like ReBid now activate and report it next to Google and Meta. Answer engines are becoming paid inventory, not just a SEO footnote.

We are already rebuilding client workflows around this stack at Dzine Prodigy. The old loop was brief, wait, review, wait again. The new loop is: set the job, let the agent grind overnight, human ships the decision in the morning.

BEFORE: a strategist burns half a day pulling numbers, then another day turning them into a deck. AFTER: the Data agent answers in one conversation and the marketing agent drafts the first wave of assets while you are still arguing about the angle.

Do this next

Pick one job that currently dies between meetings. Inbound qualification. Weekly performance digest. First-pass campaign variants. Give an agent that job for seven days with a human checkpoint. Measure cycle time, not vibes.

The agencies that treat agents like a faster intern will look busy. The ones that treat them like a second shift will ship more work this month.
